thinking next…

About one week ago, I deinstalled crossroads, breathe, and transpose from the ISE Cultural Foundation. Deinstalling work does not take a long time. I do not want to say “easy” to deinstall, but just not difficult. Maybe it is because I do not need to worry too much about “accident.” When I install speaker wires, for example, I take a long time to decide to cut a wire since if I made mistake, it would not be easy to replace. This is one of the reason why I am called “meticulous.” It just takes little time for me, but not for others.

Once I finish an exhibition, I usually make a report. “Report of what?” Most of my exhibitions have been supported by some organizations. For instance, the solo exhibition at the ISE Cultural Foundation was partially supported by ISE Cultural Foundation. In order to receive the stipend or fund, I have to report my research or result of exhibition. I had never done this kind of report when I had exhibitions in Japan, maybe because I have never held an exhibition in a non-profit organization gallery. But I see the difference between here and there now. At the same time, I am curious how the galleries in Japan have been changed after I left there in 1999.

Then, next… I am thinking next project at the AC Institute in December. I am thinking about “strings.” Let’s see what I can do…

Deinstalled decipher

Whenever I deinstall my work, I wonder how my installation/work talked to the audience. I haven’t been in the gallery while it was exhibiting this time. Actually, it is impossible for me to stay in gallery for a long preriod. When I was young in Tokyo, I was always in the gallery with my work. I could enjoy talking to my audience in the gallery… It was only for a week or two, so I could stay there in the period. Now, I don’t know how the audience talked about my work. If it got reviewed, I would be able to see a reaction, at least, from the reviewer, though…

It is nice to have enough time to pack up the all materials like this. Once I neatly pack up, the materials won’t be rust and damaged, and will be easy to transport and re-install in a next chance.

I don’t have a plan to install decipher in the future, yet.
I feel like to talk to decipher, “go to sleep for a while until next time.”

opening reception and artist talk at ISE

Here are the links for the event photos from the opening reception on 9/17 and the artist talk on 10/15.

Also I uploaded two images from the artist talk on 10/15.
Thank you for coming to this event!

Here is the guest poet: Sharon Mesmer, who read her new poem, Forever Now, which was a beautiful and nostalgic poem to me. I met her in 1998 when she visited in Japan.  This event was like a dream come true since then. Thank you, Sharon!

copying old circuit

I usually take a note or sketch when I create a new circuit. I thought I did when I installed “threshold” on the site at Onondaga Community College (OCC) in May 2007. The brownish circuit board in the photo is the original one, which was installed through a program called, Art Across Campus at OCC. It was mailed to my place because a MP3 player with this circuit stopped playing.

I was surprised when I opened the box because it is very clean even it was installed in a PVC box which was kept outside of building for two years. Then, it is still in working condition. The MP3 player made by a okay company is dead, but not my circuit, which makes me feel better. I should make MP3 player myself? Well.., it would be too complicated with little budget.

Since I can’t find the sketch for this circuit, I copied it on the breadboard. I think I should improve the sound quality for future use. “threshold” will be lent until May 2011.

Rainy LIRR

It was rainy. It was storm. I took a train to go to New York City in order to receive two recommendation letters for submitting an award. It had to have the postmark on the 1st of October. After I collected the letters, I went to the main post office on 34th Street.

Last a couple of weeks, I wrote three statements and applications for applying grants and award. It is not easy for me to write these essays in English. Fortunately, I have a few people who generously help my projects in English. I want to say “thank you” to these people here.

decipher is up

Finally, decipher is up. It took long time to complete… from mid August. But, I worked for this installation about 72hours or so. Maybe too much? I am really glad to see it works with 12V naked lamps, which I swapped to LED lights when I had a solo exhibition in the Second Street Gallery, VA. On the other hand, again, the sound quality is not great. I hope I can figure it out by next solo exhibition in December 2010. In order to do so, I should build an environment that I can check speakers of multichannel sound with lights. It will be a quite big project.

By the way, most photos for my posts are taken by iPhone 3Gs. I like the low quality images because it feels more reality than beauty for posts/updates/news.
